The single fact that should decide your hotel: the old city lanes are closed to vehicles. Your taxi stops at a barricade, usually Godowlia crossing, and you walk the rest with your luggage. Stay in the Corridor and Lahori Tola area to be minutes from the gates, Godowlia for budget and connectivity, Assi Ghat for calm and sunrise boats, or Cantonment for modern hotels and easy airport access. Most Varanasi hotel guides list properties. Very few tell you the thing that actually ruins arrivals: a large part of the old city cannot be reached by car. People book a room "500 m from the temple", land at midnight with two suitcases and elderly parents, and discover that 500 m means twenty minutes on foot through lanes where a cycle rickshaw struggles to pass.

Read this before booking any hotel

The ghat-side lanes from Assi Ghat up to Manikarnika are vehicle-free. No taxi, auto or e-rickshaw enters. Drivers drop at the nearest barricade and you walk. Before you confirm any booking, ask the hotel two questions: where exactly will my taxi stop, and how many minutes is the walk from there? A hotel that cannot answer plainly is telling you something.

Which area suits your group

Elderly parents

Bhelupur, Ravindrapuri or Cantt, with a vehicle held for you. Do not book inside the old city — stairs, no lifts, and a long walk with no way to turn back.

First visit

Assi Ghat. Quieter, right on the river, easier to navigate, and the sunrise boat leaves from your doorstep.

Darshan is the priority

Corridor or Lahori Tola. If you hold a 3 AM Mangala Aarti ticket, being able to walk out and arrive in five minutes is worth every compromise.

Family with children

Bhelupur or Cantt. Space, predictable food, and no negotiating crowds with a pram or a tired child at 9 PM.

Backpacking

Godowlia. Cheapest beds, everything walkable, and the noise stops mattering after the first night.

Short overnight halt

Cantt. If you are landing late and leaving by an early train, staying near the Junction saves more than a ghat view is worth.

Getting there: by air

Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (VNS) at Babatpur is the only airport, roughly 22 km to the Cantonment side and about 25 to 26 km to the ghats. Allow 45 to 60 minutes, more in the 9 AM to noon and 4 to 7 PM windows when city traffic is at its worst.

These are market ranges, not fixed prices, and they move with fuel, season and festival dates. Ask whether toll, night charge and driver allowance are included before you agree — that is where quoted fares and final fares usually diverge.

Getting there: by train, and the station nobody mentions

Varanasi has several rail heads, and choosing the right one changes your arrival completely.

Varanasi City Station (BCY) — the closest to the ghats and the Vishwanath corridor, roughly 400 to 600 metres. Fewer trains stop here, so most travellers never consider it. If your train has a BCY halt, take it.
Varanasi Junction (BSB), also called Cantt — the busiest, with the widest choice of trains, about 5 km from the temple. Also the most chaotic exit.
Banaras (BSBS), formerly Manduadih — calmer, easier for cab pickup, popular for newer routes. Convenient if you are staying on the Lahartara side.
Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction (DDU) — a major junction across the river, useful for connections but a longer road transfer.

Arriving at Varanasi Junction

The main exit is thick with auto drivers and hotel touts. A common approach is to tell you your hotel is closed, full or has shifted, then take you somewhere that pays commission. Walk past and do not engage. If you have pre-booked, go straight to your driver. Confirm the fare, vehicle number and drop gate in writing before boarding. The prepaid counter usually shuts around 10 PM, after which fares climb steeply.

The last mile, and why it catches people out

Whatever you book and however you arrive, the final stretch to Kashi Vishwanath is on foot. Some practical notes:

Ask your hotel for the exact barricade name your driver should head to, and send it to the driver in advance.
Travel light if you are staying in the old city. A hard-shell suitcase over uneven stone is a genuinely bad twenty minutes.
Porters are available near the barricades. Agree the amount first.
Leave large luggage at the hotel or with your driver before darshan. Phones, cameras, bags and leather items cannot enter the temple, and free lockers near the gates are for small belongings, not suitcases.
Arriving by boat is the pleasant alternative — the corridor runs up from Lalita Ghat straight to the temple.

When to book, and when prices jump

For ordinary dates, two to three weeks ahead is comfortable. Three periods break that rule completely:

Shravan — in 2026 it runs 29 July to 29 August. Rooms near the ghats fill and rates rise sharply.
Dev Deepawali — 24 November 2026. The hardest night of the year for riverside rooms and boats. Serious travellers book months ahead.
Mahashivratri — the other peak, when the corridor area is at its most crowded.

October to March is the most comfortable stretch weather-wise. Summer from April to June is punishing, and during monsoon the river runs high enough to restrict some ghats and boat routes.
