About Mandir
Gaya Ji (गया जी), also known as Gaya Kshetra or Gaya Dham, is one of the most sacred cities in the Hindu world, situated on the western bank of the Phalgu River in Bihar. It is the supreme Pitru Tirtha — the holiest site on earth for performing ancestral rites (Shradh). The Vayu Purana, Agni Purana, Vishnu Purana, Garuda Purana, and the Mahabharata all unanimously declare Gaya the most sacred of all Pitru Tirthas. At the heart of Gaya Ji stands the Vishnupad Temple — built over the sacred 40-centimetre footprint (Dharmasila) of Lord Vishnu, imprinted in solid basalt rock. The Gaya Mahatmya declares that a single Pind Daan performed here liberates 101 generations of ancestors on both paternal and maternal sides — a spiritual merit unrivalled at any other site in India. Lord Rama himself performed Pind Daan here for his father King Dasharatha, and the Mahabharata records Yudhishthira's pilgrimage here during the Pandavas' forest exile. The hereditary Gayawal Brahmins (Tirth Purohits) have served pilgrims here for centuries, maintaining detailed ancestral genealogical records so that every Sankalp and Pind Daan is performed precisely in the name and gotra of the departed. The pilgrimage circuit of Gaya Ji spans multiple sacred sites — from the Vishnupad Temple and Akshayavat (the immortal banyan tree) to the banks of the Phalgu River and Brahmajuni Hill — together forming a complete and spiritually powerful ancestral rite.
